Sunrise Series: Covent Garden

4

I’m writing this post looking out of my train window as I head down to Florence for the very first time. I can’t wait to explore the city as I have heard only the most amazing things about it! Isn’t it the best feeling to arrive somewhere new and explore the unknown? That thrill of getting lost in a different culture and city is just irreplaceable…

Having said that, as much as I enjoy travel and visiting some of the world’s most iconic monuments, the aspect that I find a real nightmare is that of crowds. It never helps when your passion is photography and someone with a huge head comes and stands right in your way!!! I’m sure we have all been there 😉 Anyway since I live in one of the busiest cities in the world, full of a mix of people working in London, and others simply visiting, there are some parts of the city that you can only find empty for a few short moments in the day: sunrise. With this in mind, I decided to give myself a challenge of photographing as many places I travel to, during those peaceful hours before hoards of people arrive, titled the Sunrise Series.

For my first Sunrise Series post, I decided to hop over to Covent Garden, an area set in the heart of London. Not only is it one of my favourite parts of the city, but throughout September Covent Garden has played home to a balloon-based art exhibition titled Up, Up and Away. The central market hall was filled with 100,000 giant balloons created by artist Charles Pétillon. Dotted all along the ceiling of the market, these little white wonders created an ethereal feeling, like you’re floating away on a cloud… It’s said that the pulsating lights in the middle of the cluster represent Cover Garden Market as the heartbeat of the area. What better moment than to photograph one of London’s most memorable little corners? Waking up at the crack of dawn was definitely worth it for these peaceful pictures…
