THE PALACE DOWNTOWN

It’s not easy transforming the heritage of a culture into the interior of a 5* hotel, and it’s especially difficult to do it well. There are a handful of resorts in Dubai which I believe tastefully incorporate the rich Arabic heritage into the hotel design, and The Palace Downtown is definitely one of them.

This boutique hotel is located in the heart of Dubai’s Downtown district, at the foothills of the magnificent Burj Khalifa. It’s like a peaceful oasis away from the busy Dubai Mall, but with amazing access to the stunning Dubai Fountain, which is a must-see if you ever visit the city. Over the Christmas holidays, I spent an afternoon at The Palace Downtown, to experience their sumptuous afternoon tea (photos of which I’ll be sharing very soon).

Something I love most about the Arabic culture is its hospitality. They go over and above to make you feel welcome, very similar to the mediterranean culture. As soon as you enter The Palace Downtown, that exact feeling of welcomeness envelopes you. Eloquently dressed porters guide you to the reception, where you are met with a calming aroma of rose petals and out, and smiling staff, as though they were prepared and waiting for your arrival. Much to the surprise of many, the heritage of bedouin design is dark wood, plush textiles and a general richness. The reason for this was their efforts to keep their homes cool in the summer, and warm in the winter, hence the small windows and sand coloured walls. And its this majestic Arabic design at its best that you find all over the Palace Downtown, but with an upmarket hotel twist.

If you are ever in the Downtown area, or simply searching for an authentic arabian hotel experience, put the Palace Downtown high up on your list. With access to some of the best spots in the city, but a tranquility you don’t often find in the heart of a city, it really does boast the best of everything. I grew up in Dubai, surrounded by the glitz and glam of some of the best hotels in the world, so it’s a real breath of fresh air to discover a boutique hotel with an elegant and rich history intertwined in its ethos.
